The village

Pyrgos lies in the Limassol district, about 13 kilometres east of the city, and its administrative boundaries run down to the sea. The land around it carries citrus, olives, carobs and almonds, and the village has long been known for the quality of its tomatoes.

Its history reaches a good deal further back than its name. At Mavroraki, within the village boundaries, excavation uncovered a copper workshop of the early second millennium BC; the medieval watermill built by Cistercian monks in the thirteenth century stands a short walk from the centre and has been a protected monument since 1984.
